Project Narrative

My project, titled "A Sustainable Approach to Urban Parking Services: Protecting Nature through Paperless Systems," aimed to enhance parking satisfaction in Ireland by reducing paper usage and promoting environmental sustainability. I set specific objectives to cut down on paper consumption in urban parking systems by introducing smart QR codes as an alternative to traditional paper tickets. This digital approach is designed to minimize waste and boost convenience. I assessed the environmental and operational drawbacks of paper-based parking systems, highlighting their inefficiencies and wastefulness. Literature indicates a strong need for digital solutions that support broader sustainability initiatives. To better understand user preferences, I conducted a survey and analyzed the results using pie charts and a SWOT analysis. The project design included developing a mobile app and upgrading ticketing machines to support QR codes for parking validation and payment. A low-fidelity prototype was created using Figma, followed by user testing. Based on the test results, I categorized the feedback and proceeded to the development phase, where I established the project’s brand name, goals, mission, values, and vision. The final deliverable was the "EcoPark Connect" app, which was represented by a high-fidelity prototype developed in Figma. Project branding and documentation are available through the provided Figma link.

Project Overview

  • Title

A Sustainable Approach to Urban Parking Services: Protecting Nature through Paperless Systems.

  • Aim

To minimize paper usage and promote nature conservation through the redesign of traditional city parking services, offering a paperless option to users while prioritizing environmental consciousness.

Research Phase

Context Background

Traditional parking systems using paper tickets lead to waste and inefficiencies. Switching to digital, paperless solutions offers a smarter, eco-friendly alternative that reduces waste and boosts efficiency. This shift supports sustainability in urban environments. Methodology

The process begins with a survey to understand user preferences for paperless parking. This data, along with a SWOT analysis, helps shape the app's development. Visual tools like mind maps and site maps guide the structure. The app incorporates smart codes, a user-friendly design, and eco-friendly features. Continuous testing ensures it meets user needs and sustainability goals for a successful launch.

Surveys

For this project's survey, the questions were carefully designed to explain its purpose and enhance the participant experience. For a closer look at the survey, check out the full details in the link below.

Ideation

Mind Mapping and Ideation

In the ideation phase, I started by crafting a detailed mind map based on data analysis to identify key design considerations. This mind map became a focal point during an engaging ideation workshop in Miro, where I developed innovative ideas for further exploration.

Personas, Scenarios

Personas and scenarios were crafted in this section to guide the design process toward a user-centred approach before committing to the final design idea. This method was employed to thoroughly evaluate all aspects of the design, weighing both the pros and cons. By incorporating these user profiles and realistic scenarios, the goal was to better understand and predict user interactions, ensuring that the final design would effectively meet the needs and preferences of its intended audience.

The scenarios for this project have been meticulously developed, complete with detailed storyboards for each one. Dive into the link below to explore the comprehensive personas and scenarios!

Prototyping

In the prototyping phase, after defining the user flow, the site map and functional modules were outlined. Initial low-fidelity wireframes were created in Figma. Following this, a user testing methodology was developed, including the design of user testing questions. The first round of user testing was conducted, and based on the feedback, the wireframes were refined.

Final Artefact

High-Fidelity Prototype

Finally, after conducting thorough research and designing the UI/UX, I developed the branding and marketing strategy for the application. I created the brand name and selected the color palette, fonts, typography, and illustrations, delivering the final artifact: the EcoPark Connect application with a high-fidelity prototype.
